Why I Chose Backun

"I first tried the Backun MoBa years ago and instantly fell in love with its rich, responsive sound. I now perform on the Q Series clarinet paired with Fatboy barrels, which offer a beautifully focused tone, open resonance, and consistently excellent intonation. Beyond the craftsmanship, I truly value Backun’s commitment to supporting students and educators—it’s truly a company that invests in the future of music."

About

Megan Williams is a dedicated clarinetist and respected clarinet instructor with over 19 years of experience as a music educator in metro-Atlanta. Her passion lies in woodwind performance and pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on developing young clarinetists into confident and expressive musicians.

Mrs. Williams maintains a thriving private clarinet studio, typically serving 30 to 40 students who consistently earn placements in Georgia All-State Bands, the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and prestigious national honor ensembles. Many of her clarinet students have continued their studies at leading music institutions such as Florida State University, Berklee College of Music, and Northwestern University. From 2020-2023, Mrs. Williams provided international instruction through Outschool, where she taught nearly 500 music students online.

In addition to her private teaching, Mrs. Williams serves as a woodwind specialist at Wesleyan School, where she assists with the entire band program and award-winning Marching Wolves. She currently works at a rotation of eleven programs in metro-Atlanta as a masterclass clinician. In 2025, Mrs. Williams was a featured soloist with the Parkview High School Wind Ensemble. She has presented on woodwind pedagogy at the GMEA Conference with a panel of professional educators on two separate occasions, sharing her expertise with fellow music teachers across Georgia.

A proud graduate of the University of Georgia, Mrs. Williams holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Education, graduating with honors and distinction. Her primary clarinet teachers were Dr. D. Ray McClellan and Mrs. Wendy Westberry, whose influence helped shape her approach to both performance and teaching. While at UGA, she was a member of the Redcoat Marching Band, serving as Drum Major and Assistant Band Captain, and was active in Kappa Kappa Psi and Sigma Alpha Iota music organizations.

Beyond clarinet instruction, Mrs. Williams has had an impactful career conducting bands for the City Schools of Decatur, Gwinnett County, and Greater Atlanta Christian Schools. Ensembles under her direction have performed in the Hollywood Christmas Parade, toured Chiapas, Mexico, and appeared frequently in community and GMEA events. Her leadership helped the Decatur High School Marching Band win its first silver division championship in school history.

As an artistic administrator, Mrs. Williams holds positions with the Georgia Music Educators Association as Community Engagement Coordinator and with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta as Executive Director. She also volunteers as the organizer for the annual “Atlanta Clarinet Day” event, bringing together clarinetists from all regions of Georgia.

Megan Williams lives in Lilburn, Georgia with her husband, James, and their two daughters, Isabelle and Eleanor.
