The European Cut (also known as the Euro Signature) for Clarinet is Légère's most flexible reed. The unique profile design allows for a bright, colourful yet warm and clean sound. It responds without hesitation and easily glides from the low registers to the high registers of the instrument.
Its ease of playing is the reason why this reed is used by so many Légère Endorsing Artists. This reed is preferred by advanced and professional clarinetists worldwide.
The Vocalise series of mouthpieces by Hawkins and Backun were optimized to work exceptionally well with synthetic reeds, such as the European Cut.
Packaging varies from time-to-time, depending on what is available from Légère. There is no way to guarantee that reeds will ship with new packaging, as shown in the image provided.

I'm overall very happy with this reed. It wasn't a different as I thought it would be compared to the last time I used a synthetic reed. It is still a bit different though after playing on it for a decent amount of hours. Still gonna have to get used to it, but it'll be nice that I won't have to compensate for the amount of change that happens with a cane reed.
Backun has always been my go-to for these reeds. My latest purchases were both on 2.5 & 2.75 strength reeds. It appears that the 2.75 always sells out and have to wait for a bit for them to be back in stock. Well worth the wait!
I love this reed! From the very first note, the sound was wonderful! And the articulation is cleaner and faster. I have always been against plastic reeds, but I would highly recommend this reed to anyone. (I really think I could sell these reeds. Don't be surprised if you start getting some sales from North Carolina). The sound is so good, I'm considering buying one of your mouthpieces. If I win a $100 gift card, I definitely will buy the mouthpiece. Wonderful reed! I am very pleased.
Previously purchased additional reeds from Backun. Moved away from cane reeds last year and never looked looked back. Sounds great with my Vocalese mouthpiece and MoBa barrel and Beta clarinet.
This order from Backun were my 2nd & 3rd reeds in 2.75 strength for my Vocalise G mouthpiece which sounds so well with my MoBa barrel and Beta clarinet.
With the right mouthpiece and with a reed of the right strength, those reeds are perfect! They aren't as uniform as we'd love (yet) but I have a set of many reeds and I can find the one that best suits the situation. The better part is that once you selected some reeds you like, they'll be exactly the same every time you pick them for the next couple of months.
I'll just share my one review & post it to the products that I purchased. first, I'm neither a clarinetist or a saxophonist, I'm a bassoonist. two, if you believe in magic, that was witchcraft! All I'd plan to do was to start getting clarinet back under my fingers, I upgraded my setup (mouthpiece, reeds, barrel), & it was like night and day. I came from a Vandoren mouthpiece & wood reeds. I have no plans to return. the new mouthpiece, reeds, & barrel made a WHOLE world's difference in my sound & tonation. FANTASTIC! will be back for more reeds & maybe a E-flat setup in the future.
I like the quick easy sound. It is maybe a bit bright. I will try a 3 instead of the 2.75. Also getting a bit of fuzziness on the high notes so maybe a bit stronger reed will help that.
Overall I think Legere reeds are great. Recently, I've been comparing the European Cut with the French Cut (both 3.25). The French Cut has it's own unique sound which I'm beginning to prefer. More care may be needed when placing a FC reed on a mouthpiece to get the best result.
I play for my own enjoyment and was a bit skeptical about synthetic reeds. I started using them about a year ago and was surprised how good they were. They don't require adjustment or presoaking and they don't get soggy while I practice. Another positive is that they last a very long time. I have to replace a reed because I bump it and put a small dent in it. If I am careful they seem to last for months, possibly longer. I think the sound is great. Anyway, I can't tell the difference and the sound doesn't change during a practice like natural reeds did.
I have used Legere Classic (2.00)and Signature(2.25)Reeds with my Vandoren B45 (which I've used for 23 years so it was time for a new mouthpiece)with ok results. The European Legere 2.50 with Backun Vocalise H is so much more responsive. I am very pleased with my new set up.
Use Legeres whenever I can, from Eb clarinet through baritone saxophone and everything in between.
If you're gonna use them - and you should - you should buy them from Morrie. Best prices and gr8 service!
I have a Vocalise H mouthpiece, and I've heard it recommended to combine Legere European Cut with this mouthpiece, which is why I tried this reed. I normally play on Vandoren V12s, so I got Legere European cut 3.25 as thats what the size chart says is equivalent. However I think this may be too soft, sometimes my altissimo notes wouldn't speak properly, I may look into exchanging it for a harder reed.
The first thing I noticed about these reeds is how much louder they are than my cane reeds.
I think these reeds will be perfect for marching band, where my priority is volume rather than curating my tone. I think these reeds speak brighter than my preferred tone, but I am still experimenting with how I would like my tone to sound.
It is very convenient that there is no break-in process, which is a huge draw to me as I find breaking in reeds can be a big demotivator for me.
These reeds play wonderfully and sound great. They do not sound inferior to traditional reeds. As a bonus, you can just put the reed on your clarinet and play--no more soaking and sucking. I don't understand why so many of my peers are reluctant to try them.
When you play a new reed it will be extra stiff for a few hours then soften to become the stiffness it will remain for months, so give these reeds a good try before deciding what number is right for you.
I play mostly jazz, use an open tip Vandoren 5JB mouthpiece, and use a 3.0 strength reed. But I do not find these reeds to only be good for jazz. Again, they have a wonderful rich tone.
Legere reeds are a clarinetists dream come true!
Beauty of sound & response is truely a breakthrough
I Legere reeds are nothing short of a dream come true!
These are the finest reeds I have found after decades of looking. I spent years sanding and clipping cane reeds, finding maybe 2 out of 20 that were really good, only to watch them fail too quickly. But the Legere, particularly the European cut 3.0, is nearly perfect with every reed. The response and liveliness is a joy. The sound projects nicely and is consistent. AND I don’t have to worry about them drying out if I put my horn down for a moment. I am sure there is a school of thought that insists that a synthetic Legere can never match up to the best cane reed. But all I am experiencing is joy at leaving the the frustration of cane reeds behind me.
Mildly shocked and surprised by the response of the 3.25 European Cut Bb reed. This reed responds well to my amateur clarinet breath, surprising as I thought there would be tremendous resistance. Thank you Backun Musical Services for getting these reeds to me in short order.
I love these reeds! The days of spending hours fixing cane reeds are over and so are all those uncomfortable practice sessions with sub-par reeds. I will say it took some experimentation to find a set up that produced a sound I like. I think these reeds pair well with the vocalize mouthpiece but everyone is different. For me, the switch to legere reeds had made clarinet playing so much more enjoyable.
This is my first experience with synthetic Reeds and so far they have not disappointed. I usually use 2 1/2 Vandoren reeds, but I appreciate the Legere being ready to use without soaking or break in periods. They are responsive to tonguing, and produce a bright open sound. My only complaint is that the highest register is a little flat. I ordered the 2 1/2 Legere and might try going up a 1/4 step and see if that remedies the situation.
Store owner replied:
Hi Susan,
I'm pleased to hear you're enjoying your reeds! You're right, if the tuning gets a bit flat you might want to try a harder strength. Legere has a great exchange program, but you'll need to contact them directly and have your original purchase receipt to do so.
Thank you!
I use the 2.75 synthetic reed as I am a beginning player and find them excellent for sound and particularly convenience. They last a few months.
I think the European Cut for Clarinet is outstanding. I use a 3.75 reed and it does everything that I want it to do. The only thing I don’t care for is the packaging. I wrote to Legere about this and they responded. It seems this is their newest packaging and they are proud of it. It is not good but the reeds are great.
