As a young musician, one of the hardest things to figure out is which setup is right for you. After a lot of research and plenty of procrastination, I decided to go with the MoBa 65mm in cocobolo, and I am extremely happy with the results.
The first thing I noticed was that it removed the “ping” that can come with projection. To me, that “ping” can make the sound feel wide and somewhat flat. The MoBa berrle removed that quality while giving the sound more shape and character, without sacrificing the projection I was looking for.
If you are doing orchestral work, I believe this setup is well worth the investment. It has given me a sound that feels much more focused and shaped while still allowing me to project when needed.

I purchased both the MoBa barrel and bell to liven-up my 1970’s R13 (Vandoren M30 mouthpiece). I was skeptical about how much difference I could attain but truly surprised; articulation was freer and responsive, my tone maintained richness and best of all, when I pushed most forte it opened up without spreading or edginess! The barrel I purchased was the MoBa 67mm and made of cocobolo. My clarinets are both Buffet R13's. I found that the MoBa barrel has an exceptional ability to even the tone between registers, as noted in other reviews. The cocobolo I found sweetens/lightens my timbre compared to the grenadilla, great for exposed orchestral moments. The MoBa in particular has granted me an advantage in sounding closer to a vocalist, which in my mind is what we are always attempting to do. It is an organic, free timbre that is perfect for what I'm looking for out of my playing. Especially good for Mozart, delicate and whimsical!

This barrel made a remarkable difference in tone and playability. It softened the tone, evened the changeover between registers, allowed me to play the highest notes at lower volumes, and the larger bore made the whole clarinet more responsive and easier to blow. The barrel fit the mouthpiece OK but the connection to the key piece was too tight. I had the tenon cork reduced a little and then it fit snugly but OK. The clarinet sound is little darker than with the stock R13 barrel, which was what I was looking for.

I believe we all need 2 Setups: one bright, one dark. It isn't about "how I want to sound in my private practice room", but what sounds best in the Environment I am playing in. When I perform on all wood stages or wood floored rooms, the MoBa is perfect sounding dark and luscious! A bright, easy blowing setup surrounded by wood stages/floors sounds tinny, thin. (When soloing in a carpeted hall, the Fat Boy Barrel is my go to!). Buy the MoBa and the Fat Boy barrels so you sound fantastic wherever you perform!!

Consistent high quality barrels. I have 3 MoBa barrels, and bought my most recent because I needed a shorter barrel. Unfortunately this last one is not really up to the standard of the other three. It sounds a little harsher, and is a little more resistant and not as fluid over the break. This is not at all a complaint about the materials or workmanship of any Backun product, which are all beautifully made of the best quality material. We all know we're dealing with an organic material (wood) and each piece is unique. If you can manage it, I would recommend buying two or three "identical" barrels and keeping the best.
