Amazing product! Might want to be careful with how you take care of the wood though, because my barrel cracked after I let it sit in my case suddenly. They were super speedy about sending a replacement, but make sure to register your product so you can have warranty on it in case it breaks
Before Xmas I bought a new Backun Protege clarinet in cocobolo wood. A few days ago I tried a Lumiere barrel and the sound improved even more. So I decided to buy it. I play on a Buffet RC, which is a great instrument, but I love more the warm and bright sound of my new cocobolo Protege with the Lumiere barrel.

As far as I know this product is great. But my child is still in middle school, and I do not know how soon, she will be skilled enough to take advantage of professional pieces like this. But my child is happy for my gift.
This is a 56.5 mm barrel for a Yamaha CSGiii. The stock barrels that come with the horn are 54 and 55mm. This is the ONLY aftermarket barrel I could find for the CSG. It preserves the excellent intonation of the instrument and gives a sound which is slightly different from the 55mm, not better or worse, just different. The bottom socket is not quite long enough to allow the barrel to seat firmly on the top joint, but that's not a big deal. I tried it on my CSG A clarinet, where it tunes badly. But that horn is a first generation CSG.

The Lumiere Barrel is the best! The difference in tone quality is superb! I recommend this barrel highly! Also, the warranty is great. My barrel cracked and they sent out a replacement right away - no questions asked. Great customer service!
I'm a novice clarinetist. I have been playing on a Beta Backun clarinet for four years and it has always been great. Recently, I added a new Essence barrel to my recently upgraded Hawkins Signature mouthpiece. The improvement in tone and response is amazing. It has made playing more exciting and pleasurable.
I like the way this barrel sounds. It is very supportive and smooth. It has a rich sound while maintaining character. I am really looking forward to seeing how this enhances both my jazz and concert performances.
I trialed the Fatboy, MoBa, and Lumiere in cocobola and then the Lumiere in grenadilla. For me, the MoBa was a little stuffy and just didn't feel good to play. But it's marketed for orchestral playing and I'm more of a jazz player these days. The Fatboy is fantastic. It blows freely with a sweeter, brighter tone. I can produce more volume of sound and a much wider range of timbres than my stock barrel. If I hadn't tried the Lumiere I would have kept the Fatboy. The Lumiere is surprisingly similar to the Fatboy. It provides a little more resistance while still feeling very free blowing. I know adding more resistance sounds counterintuitive, but for me it reined in what feels a little "wild" and bright with the Fatboy. With the Lumiere, it's a little darker and easier to keep a consistent tone at extreme soft or loud dynamics. Having decided on the Lumiere barrel (initially in cocobola), I tried one in grenadilla and preferred the grenadilla very slightly. It was just a little bit more resistant and darker still than the cocobola barrel. I don't know if the wood variation was the difference or if it was simply slight differences in these two particular barrels. In the end, I settled on the Lumiere in grenadilla. I couldn't imagine any way to improve on it. It's perfect for me. I've been playing on a Buffet R13 clarinet for 30 years. For jazz, I play on a Vandoren 5JB profile 88 mouthpiece with either Vandoren 2 reeds (beefier sound) or D'Addario Royal 2.5 reeds (sweeter sound). For classical, it's an M13 profile 88 with Vandoren 3.5s.
The barrel has improved the tone and pitch on my uber Bb Clarinet
I love the barrel and the way it doesn’t dampen my sound but still gives me a warm rich tone. Unfortunately there is now a crack on the barrel

Lumière barrels gave a new life to my Backun Legacys helping with response, better tuning and sound projection.
Backun is primo. Great products. Rich vibrant and clarion sound. Also the service and responsiveness of Backun is best of any company I’ve ever known. I will only buy Backun products going forward.
Great tone and sound for outside playing. I dont feel my Moba barrel is bright enough to carry over band when needed. Longer barrel (67) is also good for warm days.
I want every single item available for purchase. The clarinets are fantastic and they look beautiful. The CG carbon clarinet it my absolute favorite and I’ve tried it once and oh my gosh it’s the best one I’ve tried.
I thought Moennig barrels were great, but the Lumiere knocked them out of the park! The 12ths are very even, and very in tune. The sound is very focused and I find the tone colour to be very malleable.
I just love the rich tone and resonance.

This cocobolo barrel not only looks absolutely beautiful and sleek, it provides such a warm, centered tone. It's the perfect compliment to my Q Bb clarinet!
I was first introduced to ‘trick’ barrels returning to private lessons after a 48-year hiatus. My existing barrel was from a different model and far too short, leaving a huge gap. My teacher offered a MoBa to try. It was magical. I soon bought an A and found a similar improvement with a Backun barrel. For each, the tone was richer and far less stuffy. I later finalized a mouthpiece choice and then returned to barrels, discovering that the various Backun offerings were more different than merely external shape. I emailed Backun asking if all barrels shared the same internal dimensions. Apparently a simple “no” was considered too proprietary to be uttered. It was suggested that I measured them, so I did, at the top & bottom of each barrel’s bore. The sizings coincide well with Backun’s verbal descriptions, much as they remind me of wine talk. I’d list them but they’re secret! Basically, small to large by my measurements, they are Lumière, MoBa, Fatboy, and New Traditional. Other than for putting the Backun barrels in order, measurements proved meaningless. Backun’s New Traditional measures the same as one of my standard barrels, yet they play drastically different. It was much more telling playing them all! I’m no pro, and I play on old, unusual Leblanc, so my findings very well may not apply to the majority. I liked the MoBa and New Traditional but they seemed a bit too free for me. The Lumière was the last I tried and it seemed almost as good as the other two but far more easily controlled in the altissimo register. I bought two Lumières, a 67 for my Bb and a 66.5 for my A. At first I didn’t realize that Backun offered a trial period, or at least a full refund within 14 days. I believe that information is more prominent on their website now. My advice is to buy one of each for your own trial.
