Professor Chi Zheng was born in 1952 into a family full of Peking opera artists. Immersed in the family musical atmosphere, Prof. Chi developed strong interest in music and started learning clarinet since the age of 12. Chi studies with Mr. Wang Yu and Mr. He Fuxing at Xi'an Conservatory of Music. Prof.Chi has once taught at Xi'an Conservatory of Music and South China University of Technology School of Arts. Chi is also the Vice President of Chinese Musicians’ Association Clarinet Institution.
Professor Chi performed many clarinet music pieces during his 50-year career as an educator and a Clarinet artist, including all clarinet concerto by Carl Maria von Weber and many concertos from famous artists. Also, Chi has delivered his performance in many cities around China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Taipei.
Professor Chi is now in demand as an adjudicator at the Golden Bell Awards and national competitions hosted by the Ministry of Culture. In 2002 and 2005, Chi co-hosted the International Clarinet Festival with Mr. Fan Lei in Xi’an. In 2017 and 2018, Chi developed Summer Camps Programs for advanced students at Xi’an Conservatory of Music. One can also often find Chi teaching Master Classes in Music and Art Institutions across China.
Professor Chi’s instructions have cultivated a group of outstanding performers and educators, many of whom hold important positions in national symphony orchestras, opera houses, and music and art schools. Some of his students were admitted to prestigious schools such as the Julia Conservatory of Music, the Cleveland Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, the Indiana Conservatory of Music, the Munich Conservatory of Music, and the Cologne Conservatory of Music.
Professor Chi was awarded two teaching achievement awards issued by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Shanxi Provincial Government. Professor Chi Zheng is a Backun Artist and performs on Lumière Cocobolo Clarinets.
