Solid Silver Register and Thumb Tubes
Prepare to be (over) blown away.
The reaction is typically a profound amazement at the difference in resonance and freedom of airflow.
Backun custom solid silver register and thumb tubes are made of a special alloy silver (not the typical sterling silver) that has been custom drawn and hardened to a precise temper. The difference with these tubes is very significant from ones machined out of nickel-silver or brass.
After installing them in many instruments being played by exceptional artists, the reaction is typically a profound amazement at the difference in resonance and freedom of airflow. One common comment is that the upper register control is much improved. Since there is no plating to wear, the tube feels better and does not materially change over time or with use.
Will it Fit?
The Solid Silver Register and Thumb Tubes are available only for the following Backun Custom clarinets in the key of Bb and A:
- Carbon
- Lumiere
- MoBa
- Former "Backun" model
Note: Installation of these tubes requires a qualified repair technician. These tubes are available as after-market accessories only and are not included, or standard, on any Custom Backun Clarinet.
Product Reviews

Beauuuutiful!
I have the thumb tubes and register tubes installed in both of my MoBas (Bb and A). The difference is tremendous! Granted, I felt my MoBas were already superior in tone and response from the beginning, but these tubes add an ease of playing and flexibility on another level. I highly recommend these additions to your instruments - because ease of play should be our ultimate goal! Once we can no longer "worry" about our equipment "working against us", we can truly use our clarinets as an extension of our musical voice!
An Immediate Change
After many years of working with various clarinet accessories, I have never experienced anything that makes such an immediate change of evenness and core in the sound as well as making the clarinet easier and velvety in the upper register and throat tones. I am awestruck by the change this makes for the clarinet. Bravo to Morrie for this remarkable innovation.
