Backun Hardwood Collection
The Backun Hardwood Collection
There are moments when craftsmanship refuses to stay in its lane. Moments when obsession spills over, crosses disciplines, and quietly asks a dangerous question:
What if excellence didn’t have to stop at music? What if music truly was the food of love?
At Backun Musical Services, we’ve spent decades refining one singular pursuit: shaping wood into sound. Every clarinet, every barrel, every bell, every carefully aged piece of tonewood exists for a reason. Density. Grain. Resonance. Character.
And then, one day, somewhere between a cocobolo offcut and a perfectly trimmed brisket, we realized something unsettling: We had been wasting potential.
No, we’re not mixing wood dust with epoxy to craft some hybrid wood-infused synthetic instrument. That’s been done.
A New Medium for Mastery
Introducing The Backun Hardwood Collection.

Not simply wood for grilling and smoking meats (and vegetables), but a continuation of our philosophy. A reimagining of what gorgeous, soulful tonewoods can become when liberated from the confines of the concert hall and invited into the sacrificial fire.
Each piece begins the same way our instruments do. Responsibly sourced. Ethically harvested. Slowly aged until time itself has done its quiet work. The same uncompromising selection process, now destined not for the stage, but for flame, smoke, and the transformation of meat into something truly transcendent.
Because when the raw material is this extraordinary, discarding it would not just be inefficient. It would be unforgivable.
Grenadilla. Depth, Power, and Authority
Legendary among clarinetists, grenadilla is revered for its density and sonic richness. In the smoker, it reveals an entirely different voice. Think Shostakovich, except bolder.
The smoke is deep. Grounded. Almost orchestral in presence. It wraps around a tomahawk steak or rack of lamb with a confidence that borders on theatrical. There is structure here. Gravity. A slow, deliberate intensity that builds and lingers.
It doesn’t whisper. It declares.
Cocobolo. Complexity, Warmth, and Emotion
Sourced with care from the Yucatán Peninsula, cocobolo offers a different experience entirely. Think Brahms, but more romantic.
Where grenadilla commands, cocobolo seduces. The aroma is layered. Nutty at first, then gently fragrant, with a subtle floral edge that seems almost impossible for wood. It elevates ribs into something emotional, something that makes you pause mid-bite and reconsider what you thought smoke could be.
This is not just flavour. It’s musical expression to satisfy your taste buds.
Backun Precision CNC-Milled Hardwood Smoking Pellets.
Each pellet is machined on the very same multi-million dollar CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machines used to craft our clarinets. Every dimension held to tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch, measured daily on our Zeiss CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine). Every edge immaculate. Every surface a quiet testament to engineering discipline and the perfect burn.
Does any of this improve your barbecue? Absolutely not. But it is undeniably beautiful like Backun Clarinets, Barrels, Bells and soon-to-be Ligatures. And somehow, that makes everything taste better.
Mo’s Signature Blend
There are those who will want to choose. And there are those who understand that true artistry lies in balance. For them, we present Mo’s Signature Blend. A carefully composed union of grenadilla and cocobolo, finished with a whisper of CG Carbon. A blend that defies explanation and politely ignores practicality.
It’s bold. It’s refined. It’s completely unnecessary. And that is precisely the point.
For Those Who Refuse to Choose
Whether you are chasing the perfect smoke ring or the perfect chalumeau tone, the philosophy remains the same. Material matters. Craft matters. Obsession matters.
The Backun Hardwood Collection is not here to replace anything. It exists to expand what is possible when passion is allowed to wander while we think of brisket and ribs, dripping in Joel’s barbeque sauce made with love… and ghost peppers.
