Biography

Clarinetist Ellen Breakfield-Glick maintains an active and varied career as a performer and educator. She holds positions with CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra and frequently performs with the Louisville Orchestra and other orchestras throughout the Midwest. Her playing has been described by The Cleveland Plain Dealer as “both a novelty and a delight.” An avid chamber musician, she has performed for a wide range of audiences throughout the United States, at venues such as Lincoln Center, Kilbourn Hall and the Smithsonian. She also performs regularly as part of the Cleveland State University (CSU) Faculty Series on WCLV, Cleveland Public Radio.

Ellen is a member of Music In the American Wild, an NEA-sponsored chamber music group formed to celebrate the centennial of the US National Park Service. Their 2016 inaugural tour lead the group to performances in seven National Parks. Music in the American Wild was recently selected as the Eastman School of Music/Artistshare New Artist Project which aims to recognize and support the careers and artistic development of exceptional Eastman students and alumni. Ellen is also a member of the spin-off group, Music in the American Wild: Trios, a winner of a 2018 New Music USA grant for a collaboration with composer David Liptak.

As an educator, Ellen is on faculty at Cleveland State University and maintains a successful private studio. In 2016, she was awarded the Golden Apple Teaching Award, given to faculty members for excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to the CSU community. During the summer, Ellen is the Guest Faculty Director at the University of Michigan’s MPulse Clarinet Institute, a position she has held since 2014.

Ellen received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Eastman School of Music and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. She is passionate about preparing performers and educators for successful music careers in the 21st century. Her teachers have included Daniel Gilbert, Kenneth Grant, Robert DiLutis, Michael Webster and Harry Hill.
